| | Planting olive trees. | | I have a piece of land,so I decided to plant olive trees in it to sell olive oil.I need some tips to help me cause I dont know much about that, please. | |
| | 50 kilos of olive oil per person per year: What do you need to stock in bulk? | | 1 kilo equals 2.2 lbs so please do your own conversions to kilos here.
A strange Greek quirk is that both oil and wine are measured in kilos rather than litres. So when the average olive crop has been picked, pressed and sold onto the olive press the average household will retain enough olive oil to see them through the year for personal use, on average allowing 50 kilos per person per year. This would cost on average about 250 euros in the shops. Luckily some keep more back as stocks can run low. I weigh in at 48 kilos so in theory I'd get through more than my own weight in olive oil per year. At first this sounded ridiculous to me as not originating from the land of the olive, but this winter I plan to keep about my own weight in oil for the annual use of 2 of us.So how much olive oil do you get through in a year, or essential thing you need in your kitchen do you stockpile? What do you use instead of olive oil and how can you live without it?
| | Oh supreme irony... | | Well, Band-aid is about to make itself a fortune. Also, I am unlikely to be moving to Greece any time soon. Let me explain...Been having some problems with nasal allergies, so I had an allergy test done. Honestly, I'm not the world's best housekeeper and I was halfway expecting that dust mites would be on the results and that I'd have to wash the sheets more often, among other things. Not quite. Here's the list. It's only 3 things. One of them is not a surprise, really. I knew a lot of people had this particular allergy. Anyway, without any further ado:1. Olive trees
2. Bentgrass (as opposed to straight grass?[em]lol[/em])
3. Cat danderYep, you heard it here first. Cat dander. It's funny. I used to bathe my cats. But they were indoor outdoor cats and they sometimes came in with fleas, dirt, etc. I stopped doing it. Don't know why, but I did.Well folks, the bandaid people are going to be really happy because I'm going to have to start bathing cats again. At least the vet taught me how to do it so that they don't freak out as easily. Sigh.Cat allergies. Me. A total cat person all my life. Talk about irony.
| | Does your landscape change much if you travel an hour away from home? | | The landscape here is lush with olive trees, the sea on one side and the mountains behind, it is incredibly beautiful. If I was to drive an hour south though deep into the Mani the landscape would change dramatically, the sea and mountains would still be there but the land is more or less barren, with rocks but few trees, It feels as though it is a completely different place, almost forbidden.Do you also see changes as you head away from home? | |
| | We have famous olives. Is your region famous for anything? | | Kalamata eating olives are produced in this area, along with extra virgin olve oil which is produced from local olives. Both are rightly famous as glorious in taste. the olive trees are a constant part of the landscape and once November comes the first of the olive nets are laid under the tres and the three legged ladders emerge. Do you have anything that your region is famous for, a food, something it produces or anything?people are going to be really happy because I'm going to have to start bathing cats again. At least the vet taught me how to do it so that they don't freak out as easily. Sigh.Cat allergies. Me. A total cat person all my life. Talk about irony. | |
| | | Democrat Cynthia McKinney Demands Release After Her Gaza-Bound Boat is Seized | | I thought the United States was a ally to Israel at least that's how it has been until the Obamanation came in to power five months ago.

| | arabic poem | | Mahmoud Darwish's "Identity Card"Record
I am an Arab
And my identity is number fifty thousand
I have eight children
And the nineth is coming after a summer
Will you be angry?Record
I am an Arab
Employed with fellow workers at a quarry
I have eight children
I get them bread
Garments and books
from the rocks...
I do not supplicate charity at your doors
Nor do I belittle myself at the footsteps of your chamber
So will you be angry?Record
I am an Arab
I have a name without a title
Patient in a country
Where people are enraged
My roots
Were entrenched before the birth of time
And before the opening of the eras
Before the pines, and the olive trees
And before the grass grewMy father...descends from the family of the plow
Not from a privileged class
And my grandfather...was a former
Neither well-bred, nor well-born!
Teaches me the pride of the sun
Before teaching me how to read
And my house is like a watchman's hut
Made of branches and cane
Are you satisfied with my status?
I have a name without a title!Record
I am an Arab
You have stole the orchards of my ancestors
And the land which I cultivated
Along with my children...
| | Interesting Food Facts | | This is a bunch of random facts about food. I'm a trove of useless information and a info junkie so I thought I'd share some of these interesting facts I've compiled.
My friends at Yuwie are used to this sort of thing, when I find enough trivia on a general subject I post it as a blog. It makes for good reading and we all learn something we didn't know before.
Tell me what you think?
Is it worth doing here at myLot?
Is it interesting? Boring?Well, Here Goes:Almonds are a member of the peach family. In the vegetable realm, only asparagus and rhubarb can reproduce on their own for several growing seasons. All other vegetables must be replanted every year. Because Napoleon believed that armies marched on their stomachs, he offered a prize in 1795 for a practical way of preserving food. The prize was won by a French inventor, Nicholas Appert. What he devised was canning. It was the beginning of the canned food industry of today. Soft drinks are American's favorite beverage. Water ranks #2, and milk is #3. The average American drinks about 52 gallons of soft drinks per year. Every year, Bavarians and their guests drink 1.2 million gallons of beer during...
