| Evergreen trees- good to know info! | | Did you know that evergreen trees could be harmful? I found this interesting information today that people should know! I'm glad I know this now because I have done it in the past. I live in PA where evergreens are all over and everytime I have ever been to a fire we have used evergreens to add to the flames. Now I will know better!
Pine, spruce, or other evergreen wood should never be used for barbecuing. These woods, when burning or smoking, can add harmful tar and resins to the food. Only hardwoods should be used for smoking and grilling.
| | Havaianas, Ipanemas......Colonial Mentality | | There are so many things I've pondered today and some of them are things I can't simply leave without sharing. I remembered a blog being posted in Multiply about Havaianas vs. Local flip-flops (from Phil. specifically those we used to wear as a child and owned, I have many of em even used them in playing "bato-lata" and the same slippers that our parents used to slap and spank till our butts become red if we're caught being naughty LOL). Anyway, I can recall the time where Havaianas (high quality flip-flops from Brazil) is soooooooooooo "IN" and the latest trend. It is also the time when my best friend came back in Philippines for a vacation. We both love fashion so while we were both pouring in the malls and talk about the latest trends, I opened up to her about wanting to own Havaianas. It is also the time wherein these flip-flops from abroad are soooooo expensive (about 1000 plus in Phil. pesos). She asked me on why I should buy something as expensive as that when these flip-flops from Brazil were used as home slippers (the same purpose of our own local slippers in Phil.) She further elaborated that on the price alone, she can now buy an assortment of local flipflops in... | |
| | Who stole the treetops?? | | Officials are baffled over why someone would cut off the tops of nearly a dozen evergreen trees belonging to a man near Bismarck. Ron Koch estimates his loss at about $4,000. Authorities said it happened sometime within the last week."Some of them, they cut off 3, 4, 5, 6 feet," Koch said. "These have been growing 12 to 13 years. So it takes a long time to grow evergreens this big."Burleigh County Sheriff's Lt. Nick Sevart said authorities get reports like that around Christmas time but he has no idea why someone would do it now."They left the tree tops there," Sevart said."It's kind of a weird case," he said. "For the life of me, I don't know what anybody got out of it. He (Koch) doesn't seem to think anybody was mad at him."Koch is offering a $500 reward for information.Wow, why would someone do this, what did they get out of it? Can you imagine?? | |
| | The meaning of Christmas,AKA Yule....... | | As the Christmas holiday gets closer to us,we as humans,
get ready to buy our families, friends gifts for them.
Although, many people go out here and spend thousands of dollars on Christmas gifts, some people dont understand the REAL MEANING OF CHRISTMAS.
But here tonight,on Mylot.com i will explain to the members here of what Christmas means to me in my own version.I hope that tonight that some people get a real idea of what Christmas or Yule is meant in their hearts and minds."Christmas,Yule, the holiday of gift giving"To the ancients, seeing the sun seem to sink lower in the sky each day through the long autumn months must have been a frightening experience! What if the sun simply disappeared beneath the horizon? What if the winter continued indefinitely? It would mean the end of life for all creatures. At the winter solstice, the sun seems to "stand still" in the sky for a couple of days. (The word solstice literally means "sun standing" in Latin.)Three days after the solstice (by today's calendar, that's December 25), the sun starts to rise again in the sky. This is the Jul (pronounced "Yule"), the turning of the sun.It was a time of rejoicing because it...
| | Christmas A Pagan Holiday? | | It seems to be the topic of much controversy and misguidance that Christmas is a Pagan holiday. In addition, I've heard stories of people attending school Christmas plays that teach the audience and the children that this is true. If no other religion can be taught in school and the separation of church and state is to hold together as many believe it should, then why is it suddenly okay to bring pagan ritual and tradition into the classroom? It's okay to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance and out of public schools and replace it with another.
The audience and children are being severely misinformed. Christmas may involve some American traditions originally based from Pagan ritual, such as the yule, mistletoe, the Christmas tree and the like, but Christmas in its true meaning: the 'Mass' ("mas") or celebration of "Christ" does not involve any of these things to make Christmas what it is. It might be the case in some households that the tree, and mistletoe is Christmas, or "Xmas", and the meaning stops there - celebrated for the tradition. In this case, it is a Pagan holiday. Christmas is the celebration of the birth and His Epiphany (or baptism)."Christmas...
| | The Aftermath from our Snow | | After all the snow we had we have a lot to clean up. There are a bunch of beautiful evergreen trees that have been laid right on their sides from all the snow. We have branches off tress that have broken off. The snow is all gone and it is 80 degrees again. Go figure! See the video of the damage:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANeqvfiokn8Here is the snow we had:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1-Wc9Uzn7U&NR=1

| | Christmas Tree History | | Did a celebration around a Christmas tree on a bitter cold Christmas Eve at Trenton, New Jersey, turn the tide for Colonial forces in 1776? According to legend, Hessian mercenaries were so reminded of home by a candlelit evergreen tree that they abandoned their guardposts to eat, drink and be merry. Washington attached that night and defeated them.
CHRISTMAS TREE TRADITION HAS ANCIENT ORIGINS
King Tut never saw a Christmas tree, but he would have understood the tradition which traces back long before the first Christmas, says David Robson, Extension Educator, Horticulture with the Springfield Extension Center.
The Egyptians were part of a long line of cultures that treasured and worshipped evergreens. When the winter solstice arrive, they brought green date palm leaves into their homes to symbolize life's triumph over death.
The Romans celebrated the winter solstice with a fest called Saturnalia in honor of Saturnus, the god of agriculture. They decorated their houses with greens and lights and exchanged gifts. They gave coins for prosperity, pastries for happiness, and lamps to light one's journey through life.
Centuries ago in Great Britain, woods priests called Druids used...
| | History of Christmas Trees | | The Christmas tree is often explained as a Christianization of the ancient pagan idea that the evergreen tree represents a celebration of the renewal of life.
The Old English poem the Dream of the rood features a tree which becomes the cross on which Jesus was crucified. The poem also refers to the Tree of knowledge of good and evil in Genesis.
Medieval legends tended to concentrate more on the miraculous "flowering" of trees at Christmas time. A branch of flowering Glastonbury thorn is still sent annually for the Queen's Christmas table in the United Kingdom.
Patron trees held special significance for the ancient Germanic tribes, appearing throughout historic accounts as sacred symbols and objects. Among early Germanic tribes the Yule tradition was celebrated by sacrificing male animals and slaves by suspending them on the branches of trees. According to Adam of Bremen, in Scandinavia the pagan kings sacrificed nine males of each species at the sacred groves every ninth year. According to one legend, Saint Boniface attempted to introduce the idea of trinity to the pagan tribes using the cone-shaped evergreen trees because of their triangular appearance.
The modern custom,... | |
