A senior United Nations official urged a 171-nation U.N. wildlife forum on Sunday to take action to help protect animals from climate change.
The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) will also discuss measures at its two week-week meeting to help commercially valuable animal and tree species threatened by over-use.
A U.N. report has said human activities were wiping out three animal or plant species every hour and has urged the world to do more to slow the worst spate of extinctions since the dinosaurs by 2010.
Global warming, blamed mainly on human use of fossil fuels, is widely expected to add to existing threats and wreck habitats like the Amazon rain forest.
"CITES is not a forum for discussing climate change but decisions taken here do have an impact on species in a climatically challenged world," Shafgat Kakaklhel, deputy head of the U.N. Environment Programme, told the opening session.
"We will need robust species populations if they are to survive rising temperatures and more extremes," he said.

| | Car thief captured | | Last night my wife and I were watching tv late at night when a car came down our drive way. Now, this is a special event. Cars don't usually come down our drive way, especially at night. We live in the middle of nowhere and our drive way is nearly 1/4 mile long. It only goes to our house and there normally is no reason for anyone to come down it except to come to our house.When the car got near our house, it turned around and left. While it was turning around, we noticed it was a Sherriff's car. Hmmmm... we thought, "What's that about?". But, as the car left without stopping we forgot about it.Until 15 minutes later this happened again. So, I called the Sherriff's office to see what was up. They informed me they were looking for a fugative who had refused to pull over when the police tried to stop him. They did not think he was dangerous but that my wife and I should stay inside our house just to be sure. They also wanted us to call if we saw anyone lurking about. Let's see, I am 57 years young, Grandmother of 11, mom of 4, happily married for nearly 37 years. Love my home in the mountains. We have a lot of deer, moose, coyotes, an occasional skunk, one visitor we prefer to do without. The other night we had a raccoon visitor come calling at 2;30 a.m. It woke us up with a clang when it tried to steal the cat food. We have squirrels and a lot of type birds in summer. Winter birds are chickadees, blue jays and crows.
We have bear and cougar sometimes too. But we have a nice creek nearby, beautiful cedar trees and other evergreens. Winter is here now with some skiff of new snow. Cozy wood fire to curl up next to with a good book.
I play piano, love to sing and use a Karaoke machine sometimes. I am a christian and love God and Jesus. I garden in summers and love reading and writing. I keep busy with my grandkids too.
